Marcus Intalex Q&A
For well over a decade, Marcus Intalex has been at the forefront of soulful drum & bass breaking new talent and leading the way through his label Soul:r. As a DJ, he’s known for a fresh and diverse selection with the emphasis on quality and musicality above all else. Whether working solo or in collaboration, his productions draw together a range of musical influences including techno and continue to set the standard for others to follow. Marcus' diversity as a DJ means he is available for drum'n'bass sets as well as techno sets.
After establishing the groundbreaking Soul:r and Revolve:r labels Marcus has set his sights onto a brand new digital venture that will soon hit the virtual shelves of abunchofcuts.com among other mp3 outlets. More infos on this soon!
Two of Manchester’s finest institutions have recently been reunited with great success as Soul:ution returned to it’s spiritual home at the newly refurbished and packed out Band on the Wall. The crew next head to London this month, as they continue their Fabric residency in fine style alongside Marky & Friends, plus Club Autonomic in Room 3. Following this will be the second installment of Soul:ution Manchester with the residents alongside special guest Doc Scott. Last month also saw another successful night at We Fear Silence with the A Bunch of Cuts collective in full effect – watch out for more in 2010!
Q. The DAT Music series and Lynx & Kemo's 'The Raw Truth' LP have both been highly influential releases within the drum & bass scene, adding to Soul:r's reputation for quality and innovation.
How do you keep the sound of the label constantly evolving and what's next in store, both for Soul:r and Revolve:r?
A. Simple really , I just look for music and artists that excite me, that look to keep pushing the sound and know how to make things work in both the club and a listening enviroment. Lynx fits the bill perfectly: his production is outstanding and his attention to detail is second to none, that's for sure. I just want to release music that will stand the test of time and stand up in its own right as a piece of art, and not always just a tune with the specific purpose of making people dance..
Q. Your love of techno is well-known and your own music has been clearly influenced by this, as shown by your recent solo single 'Debbit b/w Four Three Three.' You've also played techno sets at Matter and The End, and the latest A Bunch of Cuts night at The Arches to name a few. Which techno artists are you inspired by?
A. There is so much great techno and house out there. I tend to cross many styles when I buy it and play it. I just look for tracks that I like. My love for techno began at it's birth. I was lucky enough to be around when Derek May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson created the sound out of Detroit. Today some of that music still has never been bettered. The second wave from Detroit brought us Carl Craig, who is still main amazing music, and is one I definitely look out for. But I have to say the Germans in the past few years have been killing it. I love the dubby sound of Mauritzio and all his aliases, Marcel Dettmann recently has been wicked and his DJ sets are amazing. Right now I'm just loving Shed: he s my fav at the mo.
Q. You've had long running collaborations with ST Files (as MIST) plus Calibre (as Mist:ical) and have also worked with the likes of Klute and Martyn in recent years. Do you have plans for any further joint projects and is there anyone in particular you'd really like to work with?
A. Yeah, we're just finishing a M.I.S.T. single as it goes, it should be out by the end of the year and there is even talks of a Mist:ical reunion - which I am very excited about.
Q. The Soul:ution Radio shows on RBMA have gained a huge cult following over the last couple of years and often showcase more experimental deeper sounds within drum & bass. Do you find it difficult to keep a balance between testing people's expectations and keeping the dancefloor energised when you're playing out live?
A. Not at the moment, no. I can only present what is laid out in front of me and right now good music is coming in thick and fast. I do like to keep the shows quite sporadic though, too much of one thing ain't good in my opinion, I see this in all forms of music. Culture today demands everything instantly, I guess I'm just old school. I am just trying to stick to my beliefs a lil'.
Q. The A Bunch of Cuts nights have so far gone from strength-to-strength, as last week's session at The Arches demonstrated. With the same residents at the core of each night, how do you keep the vibes fresh every time?
A. That's easy: each DJ is there on his own merit, specifically for pushing their own sound and being artistic in what they do. It's a good balance and it's been working ever so well. The abc event at Sun & Bass was just brilliant and the venue and the sound at the London event is incredible.
